The Human Experience, in Bronze

I sculpt the human body in bronze.

The body is the most honest record we have of what a life does to a person — strength and fragility held in the same form, motion and stillness in the same posture, what we reveal and what we protect held in tension. The work gives form to tensions that are felt before they are understood.

Each piece works one of those tensions. None of them resolves it.

If a sculpture is doing its job, you do not need it explained. You stand in front of it and you recognise something. The piece does not ask for your understanding. It asks for your presence.

The work

Each piece is cast in a fixed edition and never expanded. Every cast is recorded in a studio registry, issued with a Certificate of Authenticity, and given a unique work identifier. The edition closes when the edition closes.

I would rather make a small body of work I can stand behind than a large one I cannot.

One hand, two practices

I work in two materials.

The bronze you see here, and a body of writing called The 420 Code — a body of work that derives an ethic from physics, from a single starting line, with one measured input and no free parameters. They are not two careers. They are one enquiry, worked in different media. The sculpture asks the question with the body. The writing asks it with the structure.

If what is in the bronze moves you, the writing is free, at the420code.org.
